High blood Pressure Symptoms & Signs of Hypertension

When the pressure exerted by blood against blood vessels exceeds the stipulated threshold, Risk of complication increases which might lead to cardiovascular failure, stroke, kidney disease, vision loss and other fatal diseases. High-pressure blood causes damages to arteries which might lead to disruption of blood flow in our body. Our heart is vital organs in our body which pumps the blood into arteries. Pumping of blood creates pressure into arteries. Our heart beats continuously and pumps the blood into our body. Our hearts creates two types of pressure which are called systolic pressure or maximum pressure and diastolic pressure or minimum pressure.

Systolic pressure is created when the heart pumps out the blood into vessels. Other diastolic pressure is created when the heart relaxes between heartbeats. These two pressures are represented by numbers in blood pressure reading. Blood pressure is measured in mmHg (millimeters of mercury). The ideal limit is 120 mmHg for systolic blood pressure and 80mmHg for diastolic blood pressure.

Signs and Symptoms of Hypertension

High blood pressure is also called hypertension. You are likely to have high blood pressure if readings are between 120/80mmHg and 140/90 mmHg. You might have high blood pressure situation if any of the pressure (systolic and diastolic) is higher than its normal number. Stage 1 blood pressure situation arises when systolic reading is between 120 and 129 and diastolic reading is less than 80. Stage 2 blood pressure arises when systolic reading is between 130 and 139 or diastolic reading is less than 60.

If systolic reading is 140 or higher than it’s considered to be stage 3 problem. Medication is recommended for stage 2 and stage 3 problem.  One must get blood pressure checked up on the regular interval if he/she is diagnosed with high blood pressure. Even if the person is normal, check-up should be done once in six months.

Blood pressure sometimes comes with no symptoms. You come to know about high blood pressure through doctor check-up or monitoring. Blood pressure might be causing damage to your blood vessels and putting lots of force on your heart silently without causing any symptoms. Risk of developing blood pressure over the age of 60 is 85 %.  Blood pressure problem likely to develop when a man hits the age of 40-45 though it can happen at any age. Obesity, overweight and genetic complication can also be the cause of high blood pressure and put a man at the risk of developing chronic disease. Persistent Headache: People suffers from a constant or an intermittent headache.

Vision impairment: Sometimes people experience sudden darkness in front of eyes due to an irregularity of blood flows in arteries. Other problems men can suffer are swollen eyes, red eyes, watery eyes, pain in eyes, itching and burning sensation in eyes, seeing flashlight, double vision, blurredness, haziness.

Vertigo/dizziness: Blood flows in a body is very essential for all organs to function properly. If there is any disruption in blood flow you might experience dizziness and vertigo because of less oxygen reaching to your brain.

Respiratory problem: Extra strained on hearts and lungs can cause breathing problem. People suffering from high blood pressure are easily tired and fatigued because of oxygen disruption.

Vomiting/Nauseous:  Vomiting can also be the reason for constant high blood pressure.

Nose bleeding: Nose is linked to blood-rich vessels and located on face.  Hypertension can cause nose bleeding due to respiratory disorder. Nose bleeding can be profuse sometimes.

Lethargy:  People feels lazy and indolent because of less supply of nutrients and oxygen in the body due to high blood pressure.

Chest Pain: Hypertension causes lots of force on the heart which can cause pain in chest.

Irregular heartbeat:  Irregular heartbeat due to unnecessary exertion on heart.

Breathing problem:  One can suffer from breathing problem due to lung infection which can be aggravated due to high blood pressure.

High blood pressure Symptoms in Women

The woman goes through lots of change in the body during pregnancy.  The pregnant woman requires close monitoring and regular check-ups.  Risk of developing hypertension during pregnancy is very high due to lots of change in diet, medication, hormones changes in the woman.  Severe hypertension during pregnancy can put mother and her baby at risk and can cause complications. There are various stage or types of hypertension in the pregnant woman during pregnancy. Many women with moderate hypertension have a normal delivery and return to normal life after baby is born.  Blood pressure can affect the mother and baby life. These are some signs of high blood pressure.

Symptoms of High Blood Pressure in Pregnancy

Following are the complications which baby and mother can suffer during pregnancy:

Underweight Baby: Blood carries necessary proteins which are helpful in the growth of child but due to blood pressure problem in the mother, nutrition in blood does not reach to the baby. These proteins are very essentials in baby overall growth.  There is the risk of the baby being born is underweight depending of the severity of blood pressure.

Premature Birth:  When Baby is not receiving necessary nutrients from mother blood due to high blood pressure, then doctor suggest early delivery since baby is not growing well inside the womb. This premature birth decision is taken by doctor depending on the health condition of the mother. Depending on the severity of blood pressure, premature birth time might vary. On an average around 29% of woman delivers the baby before 9 months of pregnancy with high blood pressure condition. Premature birth of child can put child at higher risk of developing kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, seizure, stroke, heart attack in later life and require special treatment.

Placental abruption: Placenta is the organ which is attached to wall of the uterus and provides oxygen and nutrients to growing fetuses and removes the waste. When placentae separate from the uterine line during pregnancy, it interrupts the oxygen and nutrients flow to the baby and affects the overall health if foetus. This type of abruption occurs mostly around 25 weeks of pregnancy. This abruption causes lots of vaginal bleeding and lower abdomen pain, enlarged uterus, the irregular heartbeat of fatal.  This type of abruption occurs very rarely.  Around 15% of death of a newborn child is caused by placental abruption. High blood pressure tend to cause damage to internal arteries which stretches the uterus and cause lots of bleeding.


Caesarean delivery: When delivery of baby done is through surgery due to complication which includes high blood pressure, problems with placentae, twin pregnancy. Caesarean delivery requires the surgical incision in abdomen and uterus of mother. This surgery is performed when baby and mother are in imminent danger under the proper guidance of highly qualified surgeon.

Types of Hypertension in the pregnant woman: 

Gestational Hypertension: This type of hypertension arises after the 20 weeks of pregnancy. This hypertension returns to normal after the child is born but it might develop again in future. This is also referred as pregnancy-induced hypertension. This kind of gestational hypertension affects 8-10 % of women during pregnancy. A doctor conducts lots of test to monitor the overall growth of child and test to check blood flow to placentae. Doctor recommends to consume less salt and drink more water in this case.

Chronic Hypertension: This hypertension occurs in women before 20 weeks of pregnancy due to uncontrolled high blood pressure.  In this case women health condition should be assessed before conceiving child or at the first visit to doctor after pregnancy. Hypertension can obstruct the flow of blood to placentae and can lead of grave complications.  A doctor recommends regular check-ups and precautions to reduce the effects of it.

Preeclampsia: Preeclampsia is the serious situation which might occurs after 20 weeks of pregnancy. Woman suffers from very high blood pressure and its start affecting organs in woman body. Woman develops preeclampsia when any of vital organs in her body stop working properly due to high blood pressure.

Other sign of preeclampsia is the presence of protein in the urine. Woman with preeclampsia condition is likely to develop other severe condition like less number of platelets in the blood, liver dysfunction, kidney impairment, vision problem, headache, dizziness, difficulty in breathing, fluid in lungs. Women can develop these condition for the various reason. If women are pregnant for first time, older then 40, have the history of kidney disease, have another disease like diabetes, are carrying more than one child etc.

Hypertension Symptoms in Pregnant woman:

Below are some signs of hypertension and it will help you to know about hypertension.

Weariness or drowsiness:  Our organs consumes the glucose from blood which provides energy to our body system. Hypertension can also affects the glucose production in body and can cause weariness and drowsiness.

Nausea and Vomiting:  Women undergoes lots of hormonal change during pregnancy and lots of bleeding which can cause the imbalance in digestion system and women can feel nausea. 80 % of women suffers nausea and Vomiting during pregnancy. Severity can be elevated if women is suffering from high blood pressure,

A persistent headache: This is the most common discomfort women feels during pregnancy.  Headache can be aggravated due to stress and poor vision. Stress and vision are directly linked with high blood pressure.

Dizziness: Dizziness is feeling of spinning of head when sitting or moving. Dizziness can cause slip , trip or fall and can cause injuries. The doctor suggests to sit and relax whenever dizziness is felt and drink water.

Rapid Heartbeat: High heartbeat can be normal in pregnancy but there is chance that you might have more grave problems.  High blood pressure puts lots of force on the heart and strained it. Hypertension increases the heartbeat rate.

Swelling on Face: Women who suffer from hypertension can develop swelling on the face.

Vision impairment: Hypertension affects the vision and can cause burning sensation in eyes.

Abdomen pain: Because of complication arises from hypertension, women can suffer from severe abdomen pain.

Sudden Weight Gain: High blood pressure place women in condition to develop sudden weight gain due to blood flow disruption, hormones changes, and blood in urine.

Organ dysfunction:  Preeclampsia is the condition where blood and nutrients starts coming in urine. This is the most severe condition in pregnant women which can arise due to high blood pressure. Few Organ stops functioning properly in preeclampsia condition.

Regular Bleeding:  Placental abruption cases lots of bleeding and abdomen pain during pregnancy.

Blood in urine: This situation occurs mostly after the 25 weeks of pregnancy if hypertension is constantly high.

Buzzing sound in ears: Tinnitus is diagnosed when there is ringing or buzzing sound are being felt by the person.  One of the main reason for tinnitus to get developed is high blood pressure. There is no wonder that high blood pressure can cause hearing loss depending upon the severity of blood pressure.

Nose Bleeding: Hormonal change in pregnancy increase risk of nose bleeding in women. Hormonal changes cause respiratory problems which might lead to infection in lungs and nose. Nose is located at a vulnerable part of face connected to blood-rich vessels which result in lots of bleeding sometimes.
